Biography
Colombian-born lutenist Esteban La Rotta trained at the Schola Cantorum Basiliensis under the professorship of Crawford Young and Hopkinson Smith. He is one of the few specialists in the world mastering the hybrid technique of using both the plectrum and bare fingers, and has dedicated his career to exploring a vast solo lute repertoire ranging from Medieval music to the early Renaissance. As a versatile instrumentalist, Esteban La Rotta also possesses extensive experience in the early Renaissance repertoire, as well as Italian and French Baroque music for solo theorbo.
Esteban La Rotta is an accomplished soloist and continuo player. He co-directs the award-winning ensemble Rotta and collaborates with prestigious ensembles across Europe and North America. His impressive discography is featured on the ATMA, Passacaille, and Ricercar labels.
Based in Canada for many years, he taught at McGill University (2017–2024) and was the guest artistic director for the Toronto Consort at the same period. Since February 2025, he has been pursuing his artistic activities from La Gacilly, France.
